I’m a medical doctor by training. I was born in Pakistan and moved to New Zealand when I was 12. Working in the hospital made me realise the importance of addressing the distal determinants of health that make people sick in the first place. As such, I am going to specialise in Public Health Medicine, and will be studying towards a Masters in Public Health from next year. I am most passionate about global public health, in particular the social determinants of health, non-communicable diseases, health systems, and leadership in health.
I joined the Network because I wanted to engage and collaborate with other people interested in global health.
As the Internal Affairs Manager, my main role is recruiting new volunteers when we have vacancies. I also communicate and coordinate activities within the board and team. If you’re interested in joining the team or starting a project with us, get in touch with me. We may not always have a role that needs filling but I’m always happy to have a chat about how you can contribute.
I’m an active tweeter, you can follow me @MariamParwaiz, I hope to see you on the twittersphere!
