Who are you, where are you from, and what is your role in GHNGN?
My name is Margarida and I am a news writer from Portugal.

How did you learn about the GHNGN?
I first saw a post from GHNGN on facebook and started following the network. Afterward, I saw there was a hang out planned in my hometown (Lisbon) and decided to go. I really enjoyed it and a few months later I got in touch with the network.

What is your current job/study position?
Currently, I am pursuing a masters degree in public health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in London. It is a part of the Portuguese public health trainee scheme.

What career path did you follow (bachelor, MSc, PhD…)?
I am a medical doctor and currently part of the Portuguese public health trainee scheme.

What is your secret when it comes to applications? (How did you get in, if working)
To get into the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, I tried to make my application as personal as possible. I tried to show that I knew why that school was the right one for me and what I wanted to achieve there.

How does your current job/studies help you fulfill your ultimate goal/motivate you?
I believe in order to work in Public and Global Health with a more international perspective, a masters in a school with a very international ethos is a fundamental step.

Are you interested in something other than what you currently do?
A lot of my focus this year has been on infectious diseases but I am still deeply interested in mental health.

What is global health for you?
To me, global health is the health of the populations, of their environments and ultimately of the planet.

What do you think your work as a GH professional brings to the global picture of GH?
I am still focusing on my education so I believe my contribution at the moment is limited. However, educating yourself is the first step to have an impact and effectively improving lives. It starts with you.

What would you suggest a student who wants to work in GH?
Read! There a lot of different areas in global health, more than I knew and I am constantly discovering new fields and areas of work that impact people’s lives. So take your time to explore and find out what makes you passionate.
